Nor is it beyond the reach of individuals.  A 1000 foot spool of
cat5 cable is what?  About $50?  Now a spool is probably not the
best thing for simulating the inductance and capacitance of a long
straight run of cable, but...

We have several labs whose features include "real" long lengths
of cable and/or fiber...
