Philips seems to have some of the few widely used parts capable of adding USB host functionality to microprocessor systems. I don't know whether "simple to use" enters into it, though. We ended up licensing a software stack from them as well, and I don't know if a host can get away with implementing only a small part of the USB spec (ie only enough to talk to USB flash drives.) I also don't know whether the chips interface very well to small microcontrollers like PICs. You might be better off looking for a micro with integrated USB host functions (powerquicc or dragonball?), or an OTS PC-like system.
