The audio output would be connected to the soundcard, the same way as CD-drives. To further minimise the workload of the CPU, I would add some RAM on the card, and I could even have a IR remote control with a keypad, LCD, etc... It seems like very do-able project, but I was hoping someone had already done something along these lines, on which I could inspire myself. I'll probably do it eventually, it's just a matter of time... but for now I'm pretty busy with other stuff. Perhaps I could eventually submit it to the board-making contest! Hmm.. it looks like my electronics tinkering time is now 100% booked for the next year at least...
