The key thing to understand is that the added efficiency you'd probably get by using assembler or a more expensive compiler usually isn't needed. I mean, all sorts of people were doing all sorts of useful things with BASIC Stamps running slow interpreted basic with rather severe limits on program size. Think of a compiler as a faster basic stamp instead of a slower assembler and you'll be getting the idea. (especially true if you can make use of useful libraries that come with the compiler.
