New Zealand did it in about 1890 or there abouts. I'm too lazy to look it up. Australia has both systems. Voting for your local member is preferential, you give each candidate a rank & whoever gets the most wins. The Senate has proportional, so minor ratbag parties can get a seat even with a small percentage of votes.
