By accident - as is often the case.
I can't recall exactly what I did but I may have typed something like

        dir wed*j*

instead of

        dir wed*.j*
and got the result that I expected originally.

Interestingly, this works!

It does NOT distinguish between file name and extension so eg

    dir   wed*ht   would find   wedding.mht

Interesting, and certainly not what I would have expected.
Here the * is effectively expanded to *.* in old syntax.

A danger is that eg w*j* finds not only old style w*.jpg but also 
anything of form w???J???.*
where ??? is a variable number of characters.
