That could work. It all comes down to whether inflow exceeds outflow.
The player will draw something even when "off", and the supercaps have
leakage as well.  The energy stored in the cap won't be anywhere near as
large as the battery.   Work out the numbers for typical mAH on the
battery vs amp-seconds on the cap.  I think you'll be surprised how
large a cap you'll need.
