Why not use something intended for the purpose? Lots of people on the list are using Eagle. I use http://www.cadint.com/ which offers a free download version and a reasonable upgrade path to their unlimited version (identical software, different numbers of "nodes" at different levels). Great interface between the schematic side and the layout side. Idiotically easy generation of Gerbers.
