AFAIK MPLAB is quite separate from PS+. MPLAB 6.40
supports ds and rf PICs for example (as far as being able to
write and assemble code), but the PS+ does not allow you
to put that code into the chip. Whilst I don't doubt that a new
release of MPLAB will support more chips, without the PUM
f/w being upgraded you can't flash code to an actual device

That's the way it has always been in the past, perhaps things have
changed and a new PUM file is now included with either MPLAB
or MPASM

Even at the PS+ page at Microchip there's no mention at all of
a new, or for that matter even old, PUM file. But MC do like to
hide things all over the place, maybe it's somewhere at their site.
Frankly I'm happy with what I'm using (for now) and can't be
bothered turning their site upside down looking for something I
don't need anyway
