Ah... :) Maybe you can disconnect the printer's network connection and connect it after a sufficient timeout (controlled by your WOL circuit). It just occurred to me... did you ever try to send a magic WOL packet to the printer? (Of course only if it has some kind of sleep state in which the NIC is still active.)
