Since 1000 feet is not an unreasonable length for the RS-485, you can put a two-wire twisted pair plus ground {actually three wires} into every room in your home and even the yard - then have it control whatever comes to mind. The low voltage eliminates any fire hazard, the high noise tolerance allows for it to go anywhere and do most anything. Some nodes could be battary and solar powered. It even shuts out a failed node automatically. With an interface to your PC, a lot of programing challenges come to mind. I suppose I should just buy two and fiddle with them, but 10 are much cheaper. ---------- End of Message ---------- You can view the post on-line at: http://forums.parallax.com/forums/default.aspx?f=7&p=1&m=89348#m89963 Need assistance?
