I still have an active design that uses the 16C54. The volume is too low to justify doing anything with it, since we can still purchase the part. Yeah, maybe. On the other hand, the phased-out AVRs are generally replaced with pin-compatible, near-software-compatible chips. You have to wonder about companies that still NEED to buy the PIC16C84 that microchip still makes available, for instance.
