Fortunately, Microchip provides an upgrade path where I can drop in the new chip with no hardware or software changes. It's interesting that as Microchip adds featurs (maybe changing a timer from 8 bit to 16 bit), the default mode is the old one so you don't have to make any software changes. Just yesterday we were looking at moving from the 18F6720 to the 18F6722. I think the product has been in production for a year or two. During design, it was real difficult to get samples of the 18F6720, as it was real new. Now it's being phased out. I'm REALLY GLAD Microchip provides an upgrade path!!!
