When designing 3 wire EIA232 devices that don't need handshaking, I just connect RTS to CTS and DTR to DSR. That SEEMS to solve many problems (though Hyperterminal continues to have various problems). I've seen Hyperterminal throw a bunch of garbage on the screen with no handshake 9600bps 8N1 data over a COMM port (not even USB to 232). If I run Tera Term, it works great!
