The SSME is still one of the most advanced engines in existance, which is kind of sad considering that it IS pretty long in the tooth. Plus, one huge benefit of all is that all that equipment (ET, SRB, SSME) has gone through the man-rating necessary to transport people into space. Cutting that out saves a lot of time and money.
