You heat the engine, specifically the head and the top of the cylinder. 2. You spray unpressurized, unheated water into the unpressurized cylinder at top dead center. Remember the valve timing has been changed. There is no compression. There is no intake. Just the exhaust valve and that is changed to close just before TDC. 3. The water spray flashes to steam due to the heat of the air and inside metal surfaces in the cylinder. This is the most contentious part of the idea. Lots of room for discussion and experimentation. 4. The steam pushes the piston down and is exhausted at the bottom. Very simple.
