Indeed... The big advantage of the JDM is that if you have a compliant serial port it works very well, and it costs very little (I bought one premade for $12.50). Adding parts would make it work on more serial ports, but would make it more expensive, and therefore less attractive to those people that DO have a proper serial port. However, if the serial port doesn't provide enough voltage, it doesn't work. This is very similar to the Wisp628, by the way: if the target circui= t doesn't supply enough voltage, it doesn't work either. However, usually it is easier to fix the voltage of your target circuit than it is to fix the voltage coming out of your serial port.
