There was quite an art to using the program-card drum, The 80 column Hollerith cards were hand punched on the IBM 026 and later 029 models. I just noticed, that even after all these years, everybody calls it an 0xx (_with_ the leading zero). I don't remember the IBM model numbers for the computer peripheral card punches. There was also the smaller System 3 card with 96 columns (3 rows of 32 characters). I never hand punched those and don't recall the machine's model number. I did do an embedded controller for a System 3 multi-function card read/punch/print device once. Goal was data transfer between CP/M systems and the System 3. It worked too. A fascinating contract. Not lucrative, since I underestimated the work involved... >> caused the [keypunch] to jam. > I do remember the special hook-ended knife used for getting bits > of jammed card out from under the punch-head, though! :-) Wow, I haven't thought of that in a while. [pause] Just checked; I've still got one. Mine has saw teeth on the back side, opposite the hook-end. Cards were sometimes really jammed in there.
