It did not have a synchronous motor, just a little lever on the motor you adjusted while watching the strobe pattern on the motor with a tuning fork that had a built in viewing window. When the lines stood still, you were right on speed - for a short period of time. The machine worked great on 20M RTTY with a homemade (vacuum) tube "modem" - they were called Terminal Units (TU) back then. When it was receiving, the whole house shook. If it ever hit resonance with the framing, it would have brought the house down.
