The simpler the circuit and the software the better. There is no reason why it would not work. Probably in a dsPIC with a/d so a little audio filtering can be performed. The easiest protocol to implement is probably IAX2 (Asterisk's native protocol). TCP is not required, UDP is enough. The other protocols seem to have been designed by commitee (H323 for sure, SIP comes close). IAX2 *works* _*NOW*_.
