As you say, a combination of determination, luck, and lots of time will do it. Once you have WAN access, you wonder how you ever got along with 56 KBS, though. :-) Although I can remember using an old surplus TTY and accessing the university computer at 110 baud, and it seemed neat as a tick after having to submit jobs in batch mode.
