There's lots of little details to attend to that aren't really written down anywhere. A bit like writing. not trivial, but most people can make themselves understood, and only a few write best-sellers. The trace width thing is really common; narrow traces make for easy routing, and it's the eagle default. You happened to have a circuit that really deserved big traces to handle the current, but in many cases the board will work fine. I like to design boards I can make at home and have them be robust, so if I can make ALL my traces 1mm wide, I'm a happy camper... (and I keep going back to boards I thought I was done with and saying "gee, that was silly...")
