Fair enough. The actual problem was I2C being really flakey
with IntRC @ 8MHz. The solution was to drop down to 4MHz.
A problem unresolved by the Microchip forum or PIClist. MC
themselves could offer no explanation either

If anyone is in a position to replicate that it would make me
feel so less lonely ;-)
