I've been working my butt off trying to scratch together enough

I'm wondering about that, too.  I did notice that the dsPIC's
current consumption didn't appear to depend much on what kind of
code it was executing: whether it was just a big loop full of
NOPs or whether it was my application code (very heavy on the DSP
hardware usage, especially MAC operations), Idd was about the
same.

That suggests MChip either clock the DSP hardware all the time
whether it's being used or not, or (more likely, would be my WAG)
it doesn't draw much current itself.  And if that's the case,
that would suggest the 24F might take almost as much current as
the 30F.

We shall see...
