Not sure just what is going on (and don't much care, since using the serial port is fine so far as I am concerned) but about half the time the ICD2 seems to get confused when the USB port is used, and gives different error messages. The ICD2 and the target board each have their own power supply, I've tried using different USB ports just on the off-chance that it is a hardware problem with a particular port, and have tried switching USB cables - but the problem persists.
