 Wouldn't be much more easy if you'll check first if your supply
design is able to sink (not only to source) the current ? If not, all
your spike current its "eated" by the capacitor and maybe that's the
problem. (assuming you've connected suppressor diodes on the H bridge,
else everything is usless).
