No thanks. I'm convinced enough that it's OE truncating it at 256 
characters.

*BUT* the joke (or a subset thereof) is on me. I decoded to look at 
the copy of the original message which is still on my server. Before 
doing this I looked at the original downloaded message and there is no 
truncation! Olin's version has truncation. I could have sworn the 
original  was also truncated when I saw it last but it seems more 
likely that I looked only at Olin's copy.

The original truncation point is indeed exactly after 256 characters 
as already noted.
