Since you specified you wanted a standalone unit, I'd say you need two sensors - an accelerometer and also a tilt sensor in order to subtract out gravity. Make sure you get the right kind of tilt sensor, many of them are really accelerometers, you don't want that kind. Unfortunately this device is not going to be very accurate unless you can predict the amount of tilt in the suspension caused by braking, and that will vary considerably.
