That aside, it may not be possible to make them withstand the temperature=
s
of surface mounting. I just pulled out a datasheet which shows the Ta
limited to only 75=B0C (despite ceramic/epoxy packaging).

That's why you don't see SMT polystyrene (or even mylar) capacitors.
