This has been an interesting thread, but I'm suprised someone hasn't
mentioned the various BASIC compilers.

I often use PIC Basic PRO with a bootloader on 16f87x and 16f88 parts. From
a development standpoint it's very stamp-like, but of course it uses blank
PICs so long term costs are low. Initial cost of PBP is ~$200, so equivilant
to about four stamps.
