I guess my question would be how you would propose to bridge the gap between
the sort of IO, memory, etc... that C was designed for and the sort of IO,
memory, etc.. that the average PIC has?

Most of the device dependency, as far as I can see, is to deal with the
limitations and abilities of the devices. I'm not trying to say it can't be
done, but I'm curious to see if you have thoughts on how it could have been
done better.
