"sudo " around here is shorthand for "execute as the superuser", as well as a command that does that (IFF the proper administrative framework has been set up.) You could log in as root, or use the traditional su command as alternative methods. ("sudo" is convenient in a multi-user scenario, since you can revoke one user's privs without having to change the actual root password... Also, sudo works on MacOS even if the root account has not been set up.)
