This looks similar to file problems i have had on Win2k NTFS partitions. For example I could see files listed, but trying to delete them made the = system respond with a message the file does not exist, or an error messag= e i have forgot. Some files got weird names including file-name-illegal = symbols. I also had some user files dissapear. It got worse and i ended up reinstalling now and then- This happened ever= y x moths but have stopped since a) SP3 upgrade b) removal of Promise ULT= RA-ATA hard disk controller and reinstall using standard ISA driver. (I g= ot desperate)(so i since use main board slower hardware) I don=B4t know = what did it. Funnlily I did not have thoose problems with the FAT32 partition on th es= ame drive, probably some incompatibility problem with some NTFS driver on= ly. I thought it should be more safe to run NTFS... You might want to update to latest harddisk controller driver for it not = to happen again or try remove or change harddisk controller hardware. I also in history have had a hard disk with transmittent errors. Both NT= and OS/2 install attempts produced all kind of weird error messages, Win= 95 installed and screwed up. I think i ran a disk test utility but it did not find any error. So i tr= ied harder: Using DOS i got error message sometime when copying file to i= t from diskette, trying to read it back produced "sector not found". Wit= h screen copy from that I got the drive exchanged (no cost) for another -= of exact same type- and it solved everything.
