Crimp cup for mechanical connection. Most crimps will be too large for the final app- ultimately, the smallest IR LED I could find will be soldered to the end and it'll be hung on a mouse (!). However, dipping the end in a blob of molten solder may have the desired effect, both tinning the end and causing the insulation to melt and shrink away from the end.
