There are a fair number of sites in the UK where records can be searched
through the 'net. Several have census records accessible, but not sure if
they have records going back to when your ancestors left for the USA. There
projects around though to get many old church records and the like into 'net
searchable form though. Will try and find you some links - just don't hold
your breath, it may take a while.
