A big part of why people use BS is convience/ease of use. Having to layout a PCB, wait weeks for it, possibly redo it... wait more, then buy a variety of SMT components and do some SMT soldering isn't what most would consider convient. Buying one 'SX Stamp' from Parallax all set to go is convient.
