Normally the modem will send some response to the PIC, right? For example, if a PIC send an AT command to a analog Modem, it will reply with "OK" or something similar depends on the AT command. Then you can check whether the response is what you expected. If there is no response within a preset timeout period, then you assume the communication is not established.
