Thank you for the reply.

The rev. B1 silicon errata sheet (all I find at m'chips site) does not 
appear to mention txif anywhere; but that came out 6/23/05 and my '88 
chips are maybe a few months older, not sure which rev they are.  Is 
that something that my Picstart Plus will show me?
