For the cost of only one pin, for a chip select on the LCD, could you use
the SPI pins to drive those two pins on Mykes circuit? (assuming use of
bit-bang SPI, and non-interrupt driven SPI peripherals).

Another possibility would be to check the dsPic chips, as some of these have
2 MSSP interfaces.
