On the topic of other processor choices, I really like the HCS12 series from freescale (motorola). There are relat= ively=20 cheap development environments available (Metrowerks C compiler is free u= p to=20 32K code size, GNU support, relatively cheap and now also DIY BDM cables). There are (at least) one derivative with ethernet capabilities and the ne= w=20 HCS12X has an on board risc processor that can offload the main CPU (the = risc=20 processor can access ram and peripherials). The new ones are also suppose= dly=20 easier to run in expanded mode where large amount of ram/rom/flash are ne= eded=20 (or a bus connection to other type of peripherials like displays perhaps).
