There are many inverters that run natively on 24v. I think I know the "300W" inverter you speak of, it is a very cheap squarewave unit, correct? It might take 24v if you were to analyze the circuit and determine which parts would require modification. Otherwise you could do like someone else said and create a separate 12v system.
