First, there is a lot of stray capacitance and inductance in the package at 2.4GHz and second, nobody would want to buy a bulky DIP RF chip. I would buy the module from MChip (in fact I bought the whole demo kit). Other options include modules from Panasonic (available through Arrow), Helicomm, LSResearch, Millenial Net, or a ZigBee demo board from MChip or Freescale. ICs are available from ChipCon, Ember, Freescale, and ZMD. I recently ordered some SchmartBoards (www.schmartboard.com), which are prototyping boards and am impressed with the quality of the product. Even though the name isn't very professional sounding, there boards are very nicely done. You can probably get a board that would hold the RFIC, but it is unlikely (IMHO) that you will get anything to work going that route.
