probably the cheapest solution for ethernet to serial is to use a Lantronix XPORT. Build a simple board with the XPORT, power supply and an rs232 drive like max232. The parts cost is going to be around $60. Lantronix has a windows virtual serial driver for it. no driver for linux, though. I've been playing with one and it seems to work though sucks a huge amount of power (~200mA at 3.3V). Also, I'm using a Comtrol Rocketport si serial hub to integrate a number of serial devices for access/control via ethernet. works quite well and I run one link at 115K. I got it on ebay for about $85 though I think that was a screaming deal as I've been looking to pick up another an they are much higher now.
