For Tx only, use the Pic to generate the DTMF (microchip AN543)

For Tx/Rx, you can add a CM8870 to receive the DTMF signal save on
software...but i think the cmx624 or 680 might be a better option here

Also have a look at SM8223A & C from NIPPON PRECISION CIRCUITS INC.

what about the cid ics like the cmx602  - can receive data on and offhook
