If you do not have the industrial exemption by working for a larger corporation you can not call yourself an engineer nor can you advertise that you do engineering work. I do consulting work and even though it looks a LOT like I can not say that since I am not a PE. Utah went after Novel Engineers on that type of clause and told those they targeted they would drop the charges if they helped in a suit against Novel since only the state can grant a title of Engineer. Microsoft now calls their people Microsoft Certified Professionals instead of Microsoft Certified Engineers for the same reason. Their internal employees are still called Engineers and by law they can be but independents can't unless they have a licence..
