Might be because the mailing list messages apear to be sent to the mailing list address, not the actual persons address. A lot of systems think all messages not addressed to you are spam, because a lot of spamming systems don't properly use To: addresses. Strangly, gmail thinks it's an entirely new conversation when the subject line changes.
