I know the potential issues with the I/O read/modify/write mechanism in general; I would not have expected it to come into play in this situation. However, I'll not fall for this again, at least not quite as easily. >In what way "paid off" ?? In that I found this issue (a visually good but electrically bad connection to VSS at the processor dip socket) before moving on to the more complex bits of the project where things would no doubt have been even more puzzling. (I'm relatively new to the PIC family, and freely admit to being surprised to see a seven-segment LED controller module continue to operate, a bit more dimly, after power was removed. The other platforms I'm more experienced with generally don't want to run off of the data and clock signals sent from another unit, nor do they tend to perform at all with a duff ground connection at the micro.) -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
