A PC-oriented "label printer" with some level of internal controller 
sells
for about $100, and some can handle "continuous" labelstock.  I don't 
know
offhand whether they can handle non-label thermal paper (it seems 
likely, but
may not be "supported."  OTOH, they may not be up to the desired duty 
cycle or
robustness, and may not be sufficiently documented to embed...
