So I've decided to go with RS485 for this app.  CAN looked really appealing, 
but I chose RS485 since it seems simpler to implement, and should cost less 
(though a few extra bucks on each board for CAN isn't really much of an 
issue).

Also decided that I will run 8-9V on the lines and regulate that down to 5V on 
each board.  Should make for a simple circuit and use up some of the parts I 
have laying around.

What I find odd is that the protocol seems really popular, but not much code 
example around.  No prob though, cause it does seem really simple.
