The following note appears on p. 13 of the PIC16F688 datasheet (DS41203B):

Note 1: Bits IRP and RP1 (Status<7:6>) are not
        used by the PIC16F688 and should be
        maintained as clear. Use of these bits is
        not recommended, since this may affect
        upward compatibility with future products.

This note is incorrect.  IRP and IP1 are both used in the 16F688.
